Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, declared yesterday that “the euro is in danger”. She is surely right. It seems increasingly likely that the currency bloc will fracture or shrink, losing at least one of its sixteen members, although the gargantuan €750 billion international rescue this month has bought it time......

Significant that this is a Times leader article, without a byline..

..this can therefore be seen as representing the thoughts of king Rupert..

Across europe there seems to have been a sudden shift from the notion that the euro is a sacred thing that must be defended to the death, to one where every country is asking itself 'what has the euro done for us?' and 'what is it worth paying to preserve it?'

Yet it still doesn't seem to have dawned on The Times, and other commentators; just how easy it is for a country to exit the eurozone - and why should any country worry about enraging the ECB? What the ECB thinks after the event is irrelevant.
