This will get HPC's public sector supporters excited

Times: I’m not worth £213,000. This wage bill is mad

There is one universal truth in a free market economy — Micawber’s law: Annual income £20, annual expenditure £20 and sixpence, result misery.

As a public sector (NHS) worker, I agree with a lot of what Norman Bettison says.

However, to suggest that "People join, and remain in, the public sector because of a sense of vocation — to make a difference to society or to the quality of people’s lives" is a rather outdated view nowadays. Also, I would take to task the assertion that we produce nothing - our Clinical Laboratory produces nearly 10 million vital diagnostic test results every year!

The real problem is all the highly paid "non-jobs" that have been created - the commercialisation of the public sector and creation of all the quangos. The problem with removing all the non-jobs is that the post holder are often the ones in charge and turkeys don't vote for christmas!!
