Whilst I have concerns about how immigration is being mismanaged (I believe in free movement of people but that is not practical due to the distortions caused by the welfare system), I can't stop thinking of that "Mrs Brady, Old Lady" strip from Viz when I see a picture of this woman.

Long time reader, first time poster - first off, it's funny how this site has become a news site (and an American one at that) as opposed to a decent source of info on the housing situation in the UK (which is what it was about 1.5 yrs ago when I first started reading it).....anyway....look, that women IS a bigot, she was talking about how "those people take our jobs". Brown was right to call her a Bigot and it's a shame he had to apologise, far too many people in the UK moan about all the immigrants in this country and claim they are taking "our jobs" when in actual fact there are very few people in the UK who would want to do those jobs in the first place because they feel they are beneath them and too poorly paid. Sadly, the UK media / political machine is just far too PC to come out and say that the view that "these people are taking our jobs" is outdated and old fashioned. It's a shame Brown didn't have the balls to stand up for what he actually believes and that's why he needs to go, because he listen to his PR team too much, not because he said anything wrong.

I don't care what Gordon Brown thinks in private about a woman with some daft ideas about immigration. I do care about over-inflated house prices. I like this site but sometimes it gets carried away with stories which aren't relevant to house prices. The clue is in the title chaps.

Trust Brown to f*ck it up further by trying to pretend he didn't really mean it. He'd have done better if he'd stuck to his guns. Nobody was ever going to fall for his grovelling apology. Saying this and then trying to limit the damage the way he did proves what everybody thought - he'a a bad-tempered, image-management fake. (The others are, of course, just vacuous, image-management fakes.) And what a shambolic crew he has - nobody aware that the mike was still there. Incompetent, image-management fakes.

Devo - The ultimate tragedy of this incident could be that the public comes to believe that 'politics must attract the wrong type of person'.
My experience of standing for election, and being elected was that nearly all the minor politicians I met seemed to hold the highest standards of honour and honesty, they were just trying to do their best for their communities. That was my own ambition, just to do whatever good I could within a difficult system. I accept that this was more than a decade ago.
Presently, I live in a country where little is certain, corruption is a way of life, and even the police and courts are to distrusted. The road to this corrupt system begins with the arrogant pig trough behaviour as shown by many British MP's.
We do not realize how precious our once proud democracy was.

Democracy is by its nature always going to produce short-termism, herd mentality and vote buying. In the year 2000, the discrimination against "lunatics" was removed when psychiatric hospitals were allowed to be designated as registration addresses for voters, a move probably undertaken because there's widespread insanity anyway.
The idea that this country ever had a democracy to be proud of reminds me of a story my friend tells me of his six years living in Lima. He said every travel book wrote "Lima must have once been a beautiful city". Every history book going back to a few years after Lima was established wrote that "Lima must have once been a beautiful city" or a variation thereof.

There's no escaping the fact that what she said was bigoted, i.e. describing people as 'these people', their behaviour as 'flocking' and asking where eastern Europeans are coming from - which is just plain dumb.
So a politician made a remark that was truthful and showed insight and the half-wits are manipulated by Murdoch's school-girl histrionics and scream for blood. Brown has shown himself to be a two-faced lying tw*t; not for calling the woman what she undoubtedly is, but by being dishonest to her face and presenting a false image to the media. Well shock horror, it would appear that politicians present an image to the world that isn't sincere. We end up with the politics and a political system we deserve and I can only presume that the rabid nutters on here would much prefer a better class of two-faced lying git - ones that can get away with it better like Clegg and Cameron, who are clearly more gifted actors and presumably fitter for the job. Great.

Have very little time for Broon but we was stitched up by Sky News here. Remember Murdoch has a lot to gain from that complete tosser Jeremy Hunt getting control of the DCMS and shutting down even more of the BBC than they've been forced to do already.
What's interesting though is the complete absence of any debate on immigration ... pol after pol is allowed to rabbit on about how the wonderful points based system or additional tory quotas will fix everything, while the elephant in the room - uncontrolled immigration from Eastern European 'new' EU countries, precisely the point the lady made - gets bodyswerved by all.
It's like there's an agreement between all parties (and their cheerleaders in the media) just not to look at it, in order to marginalise UKIP and maintain their own internal coalitions on Europe.

The question I would like to be asked is why we heard him at all. Should his car not be fitted with some kind of material to attenuate radio signals. Its a good job he was talking about that women and not bombing Iran! How hard would it be to drop something into his pocket then listen to 'private conversations' as he runs the country remotely in his limo?

LP got the nail on the head. Anyone thinks this is relevant is missing what's really going on. Rupert Murdoch wants Cameron so every chance there is to smear Brown (yucky thought) will be grabbed. There is almost no equivalent scrutiny of Cameron.
Before I get it in the neck for being a Broonite - I'm not. I have contempt for everyone and everything.
Mr g Orwell was not a socialist. Try reading some of his stuff. In 1984 Ingsoc was his condemnation of socialism. In Homage to Catalonia he realised the only political group with any honour or actual clue were the anarchists.

For Brown its determination and survival. Daniel Hannan referred to this in his famous speech which has been posted on Youtube UK (and linked many times from this site).
I sense Brown's comments will upset the rank and file Labour "door knockers" more than the Conservative and UKIP voters who are the main contributors to the HPC site. Gillian and her family were core Labour, and they've been ignored, then insulted.
I wonder if "Sue" is still in her job after allowing this disasterous photo-op to happen? It can't be Brown's fault - can it?

All of us have some elements of bigotry in us particularly regarding political persuasion. All of us have prejudices, it is an efficiency tool. A couple of weeks ago I interviewed for a junior position and if the applicants spoke 'multi-cultural English' more commonly known as Jafaican with its inbuilt grammatical errors, I prejudged that that is how they would speak at work and their written English would be poor. Now this might be wrong, their grammar and spelling might be better than mine but by making an educated pre-judgement I am saving myself the hassle of failing their probation and having to go through the recruitment process again if I'm right.
Democracy in partnership with enlightened education sounds good to me. One has to earn ones right to vote by a demonstration of educated enlightenment. The problem with that is the removal of grammar schools has kicked away the ladder to education for many poor and middle income people. I don't have a perfect alternative and I doubt anyone does but I don't think democracy in its current form can solve anything.

Gordon was miked up by Sky (apparently by request) whilst on walkabout/meet & greet in Rochdale and forgot that this was still the case in the get away car - hence it was broadcast for all to hear.

I think you miss the point. Brown was on a 'kiss the baby' style publicity walkabout where his team were trying to use the media to portray him in a caring and approachable light. Having sucked up to the woman for the cameras, once back inside the car we see the real Brown - a two faced git showing his true feelings of contempt.
We need an honourable man for PM, not some dishonest spin merchant. (and before you ask Devo, no I can't suggest one)

p. doff - I am saying that I wish we would see more of politicians meeting people on the street prepared to ask difficult questions. I would ask why he sold the gold when he did. Why did he tax pension funds (see http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1531448/Browns-raid-on-pensions-costs-Britain-100-billion.html) and then not compensate people who lost out when those pension funds collapsed. No wonder people now view their homes as their pension pot. Why did he not take action against dodgy lending and house price bubble so that later a massive financial industry bailout was required.
That lady was prepared to ask awkward questions that mattered to her and GB squirmed and struggled to answer. That was good stuff, the thing politicians hate because it puts them on the spot. Instead some mutterings under his breath in the privacy of his own car get the headlines. 2010 the year thought crime is instated?

I have some sympathy for Brown here. After all, I've called him a few names in private.
What I'm interested in is that whilst talking to the lady he said that they (Labour) were going to halve the Debt. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they planning on just halving the Deficit? There's a huge difference.
