One in three landlords about to contribute to the treasury
City Wire: One in three tenants at risk over gas safety
Is the BTL bubble bursting? All the "amateur" landlords not paying tax and not bothering to follow the rules? Maybe they should have given their money to the pension fund cowboys after all.

'This means they may not be aware of their legal obligations, particularly if they’ve advertised for tenants privately, rather than through a letting agent'
That's a generous interpretation. I would suggest that perhaps they are well aware of their obligations but either can't be ar$ed or are too tight to pay. Insist on getting the safety certificate with your move in pack.

Around xmas time a friend of mine and his girlfriend became quite ill, shortly after their boiler stopped working altogether. British gas claimed their boiler had been leaking CO into the flat for god knows how long, was the cause of the issue and condemned the boiler. The landlord got his mate round to replace some parts on the boiler, ripped off the condemned sticker and tried to make out it wasn't a big deal. My friend and his girlfriend promptly moved out and called environmental health only to be told that they couldn't do anything because the property wasn't currently occupied. Screw this country, what a joke.

And what criminal penalties can tenants seek to apply against lazy and indifferent landlords?
Nope, didn't think there were any either.

That's right - penalties should be much harsher. Otherwise what's the point in having it.
Also, up to 70% of the so called "gas engineers" around are not fully certified to carry out gas work in your home.
Go to /www.gassaferegister.co.uk/ and check the engineer or company that turns up to go do gas work of any sort for you.
All companies and engineers are on there so if they are not on that register they are working illegally - so tell them where to go!
