A lesson for the UK?
Figaro: 1500 houses to be destroyed
Firstly, apologies this is in French. However the picture says it all. Nice seaside houses (like Sandbanks maybe) have been flooded by the bad weather and the plan is to knock them all down. Between 1300 and 1500 to be bulldozed. Yet still in the UK we have people begging to relax planning restrictions and build property on the flood plains. I wonder if the local authorities will pick up the tab, as is happening here?

Much of the Vendee area is flat and barely above sea level. What were they thinking building those houses? Canals with houses on stilts would have been more sensible.

That's not how we do things in home-ownerist Britain. Local authorities and the Environment Agency spend squillions building flood defences and barriers to protect the homes of the wealthy around the coastline. Remember home-ownerist myth #1: we're a small island with no room left for new buildings - therefore we certainly can't allow tides or weather to destroy any of our precious coastline.

Why should the gov't stop building on an area which will generate huge wealth from the general public over a long period?
Initially:-
-Increased insurance rates (Costs covered by public)
-Generating work from flood defence industry
Then in the even of a flood:-
-benefit to renting, hotels, b&b's due to temporary displacement/relocation
-Work generated for re-construction and repair
-Retail purchases etc...
Wouldn't surprise me if it were easier to build in a flood plane than anywhree else!!! ;-P

markj,
Yes that's a great idea! Can we also build a negative railroad while we're at it? The more times the train stops, the more people have to buy coffee at the station, sleep in station hotels, etc. It's economic genius!
