Vote for Christmas, turkeys

The Times: Government webpage for every citizen in the race to create a paperless society

The aim is that within a year, everybody in the country should have a personalised website through which they would be able to find out about local services and do business with the Government.

What if I don't want one?

Meanwhile, what's this got to do with house prices crashing?

Sounds like a giant IT ponzi scheme and a potential nightmare if it all goes pear shaped but at least all the redundant state employees will be able to collect their benefits from big brother at the click of a little button. What use is the state if it doesn't need people anymore and conversely what use are people if the state doesn't want them!

and what happens if some miscreant despotic tyrant somehow rises to power?

they say it could never happen, just like every other time it could never happen.

Hitler was democratically elected. Just imagine if he had access to all your electronic records in the database state?

Just link it into google street view and you could paint virtual red crosses on peoples houses without ever showing your face and paintbrush in public.

The possibilites are endless.

Good job the governmnet has such a great reputation for delivering grand IT schemes on time and to budget... oh, hang on....

Surely MySpace or Facebook could be modified to do this at a fraction of the price? They are proven database driven web-apps. You could license the technology ans re-skin them for dull folk with big red buttons, and smileys everywhere, etc

I think invading iraq and afganistan resulting in the death of 600,000 people based on complete lies is comparable with hitler imo as is the stifling of free speech and left wing only politics

apparently tony bliar is helping labour win the next election...he should be in the haige

I don't want one either.
Since the government is such a huge employer this would drive unemployment figures up as well as all the other problems associated with financial online transactions.
Job seekers can be got without having to see an official, apply from your laptop sitting on a beach! The face to face is about making sure the benefitee is not trying to con the state.
Some stuff using modern tech is good, like the text apt reminders, but this whole sale approach is dangerously stupid, can't see it being a vote winner with that all important political group the oap's.
I'l getting really worried about george orwell's vision coming true, and to see an up to date version try ben elton's blind faith.
We are sleep walking into a dangerous state. We are the proverbial frog in the boiling water, we need to jump out and turn off the gas before its too late!

This assumes everybody in the UK is connected to the interweb.

Any money saved would be easilty swallowed up by whichever large US IT consultancy "chosen" to delivery this
project 5 years late and 15 billion over budget. Probably the same IT "consultancy" that lobbies the "government" to
keep attacking intependent IT freelance workers with things like IR35.
