Times on line: Election uncertainty stalls housing recovery

Political and economic uncertainty ahead of the upcoming general election has been blamed by the Nationwide Building Society for a muted rise in house prices.
The average price of a home in the UK rose 0.7 per cent this month, not quite reversing a 0.8 per cent fall in February. The Nationwide said the average house price now stands at £164,519.
That is 9 per cent higher than a year ago, though the annual rate of increase eased from 9.2 per cent in February.
The Nationwide, one of the UK's biggest mortgage lenders, warned that a housing market recovery could not be read into these figures, pointing out that the housing market had slowed in recent months.
