Ideas for reform

Guardian: Take on the City with a 'people's budget'

Good article with suggestions on how to deal with the long-running problems. LVT even gets a mention. The problem though is the big boys who won't want to give up their lives in clover.

Three cheers for Larry E. He seems to sneak in a reference to LVT whenever possible.

LVT would in effect end the hundreds of years of free money given to the old aristocracy who keep their [stolen] land values high, by
slowly dripping off bits here and there to pay for their dim-witted offsprings' public schooling. These old families effectively control
the country via the House of Loons and their politicla wing; the Tories.

The last time LVT looked like getting anywhere, we had WWI to keep the proles busy.

Real estate values
Real estate bubbles direct savings towards rent seeking activities rather than other investments, and can contribute to recessions which damage the entire economy. Advocates of the land tax claim that it reduces the speculative element in land pricing, thereby leaving more money for productive capital investment and making the economy more stable.[11]

If the value to landowners were reduced to zero or near zero by recovering effectively all its rent, total privately held asset values could decline as the land value element was stripped out, representing a shift in apparent private sector wealth. Since landowners often possess significant political influence, this has significantly deterred the adoption of land value taxes.[12]

I thoroughly enjoyed that - what a great understanding of history. If only Gordon and Alistair could tack a grip on history and surprise us with abolishing National Insurance and council tax and putting in LVT.
