Reuters: Online poll puts Tories on course for win
An online opinion poll on Friday showed the Conservatives well ahead of Labour and on course for election victory, contrasting with other surveys showing the race too close to call.

I believe (for my sins) that this outcome will hold up - come election day. What I wish for is that the Liberal Democrats finish second in total percentage of the vote, simply to demonstrate the paucity of our electoral system in terms of number of seats. Our politics is broke. There's lttle integrity. Most of the people (but not all) that populate the hallowed halls of Westminster are career self promoters, who have little interest in serving the national interest. Their cv's wouldn't get them past the first round in most private sector executive interview rounds. Unfortunately, the people who want power are never the right people to have it. How, and I mean how, does a man with limited qualifications; no true life or work experience, and no talent wind up Prime Minister of our country. I fear that the UK is finished as an autonomous economic and political power/influence. Long time coming. It was built on the rape and pillage of several islands and lesser nations over centuries. Whoever 'wins' - they've got a tough and thankless job ahead.

The problem with online polls is that they tend to be self selecting and less accurate than real world polls.

Oi dilldo how about a large part of the uk's success was built on the incredible effort of the working man and woman during the industrial revolution. Ooops must have slipped your mind eh?

The Angus Steak house poll is definitely rogue. It doesn't hold true with the others. The latest you Gov have the Tories down again, with only 3% in it.

You really need to study some history instead of reactionary drivel that you come out with.
The UK's success was built chiefly on two things:
1. land clearances of peasants to allow industrial sheep production for wool and the subsequent manufacture of wool (enclosure acts)
2. exploitation of empire - effective slavery of many other countries
There are lots of other reasons and it is all chicken and egg, such as our banking system facilitated the enclosure acts and empire building by providing finance.
Our industrial prowess came out of our ability exploit the land we chucked first our peasants of, then the peasants of the world. This gave us the wealth and free time to invest in industrial development.
I come from a long line of mining engineers and I am proud of their skills and efforts. But thankfully the intellect they gave me allows to rise above the simplistic jingoism and bluster.

My most fervent wish for this election is to see major incumbent MPs get chucked out and humiliated. Maybe then the message may finally sink in that they 'dun' wrong. Certainly those pr$ts claiming partiamentary privilege still don't get it.

We had the Enlightenment without invasion or revolution, which allowed us to take collective actions in the resulting stable environment ti boost food production and exploit our easily accessible coal, which triggered our early industrial age. Exploitation of peasants was the powerbase of the previous age, and lots of other countries did it more effectively than Britain - think Russia or China - but did not start an early industrial age.
