In my areas, I am seeing loads and loads of houses coming onto the market. Perhaps the law of supply and demand will finally start working in the favour of the buyer,

Fancy the Homebuilders federation grumbling about a housing shortage? They should have a word with their own members instead of grumbling to Sky news. Maybe they could try reducing their prices a bit?

@1 surely not, there are no houses left! You best run out with cheque book & buy what you can NOW, otherwise you will never have a home.
Dare i say that with the fall in sterling & hike in inflation, a few migrant workers may well pack up & leave blighty amongst the already naff-ed off Brits leaving! That's if they are not flying with BA..
& how many already empty houses? Did i hear someone say 870000 with enough commercial property to create another 420000..

Ballcocks - there will a steady increase in properties coming onto the market, especially family homes as increasing numbers of post war baby boomers kick the proverbial bucket. Many of these homes are much larger and of better quality than anything the Homebuilders Federations are currently building and are pound for pound probably better value.

"Her two sons aged 10 and 13 share a room that measures around three metres by four. It is not large enough for a bed each, so the boys take turns sleeping on the floor." I was brought in the same conditions and used bunkbeds. We turned out OK. Don't see why council house tenants deserve different. If she doesn't like the taxpayer subserdised lodgings, move out of London.

@ mken, once we've replaced as many taxes as possible with Land Value Tax, there won't be such a thing as empty homes (or certainly not on that scale).

hpwatcher its not a shortage of housing as such its about affordable housing and the shortage lies in council housing shortage for people that will never be able to buy their own home or don't want to ?

Always seems to be enough housing to furnish our elected members of Parliament with a second home, plus however many they need in addition as investment vehicles.

What could possibly be the problem (ahem)?

wow, if we keep going at this rate the country will be as heavily populated as japan and we can look forward to their astronomic houseprice rises based on a shortage of homes. oh, hang on, they've been falling in value for the last 20 years..
