And why not?

This might upset those who believe in the BBC aka Baby Boomer Conspiracy.

This makes a distinction drawn by the current government very explicit. They do not represent the British people, they represent the people who reside in the UK. I think this is commonly misunderstood. It would be nice to clarify exactly what they will do at a personal level. For example, if a British citizen lives abroad then you lose access to benefits for 6 months on your return.

Its clear that people who have permanently emigrated should really be casting their lot in with the new country entirely, but this case with pensions makes a line about the role of national insurance being more -pension provision for UK residents- rather than personal provision, but I think that NI is seen as personal provision, because at the same time your level of pension is qualified by the number of years paid in, even for residents.

The obvious conclusion though, as with most things, is to reduce when possible payments to the UK government, as they will strictly reduce their payments to you through fair means or foul.

The ruling has been given and is 11 to 6 against the pensions of expats being indexed.

That is an absolutely spot on argument, I agree 100%.

"But Government lawyers said the priority had to be to target money on the poorest pensioners living at home, and that it could not apply increases to those opting to live in countries which have no reciprocal agreements with the UK"

This rather highlights the ponzai nature of pensions. If they have paid into a pension fund of any type (whether through NI or not) then surely that pension is funded in a way to pay out all of those people who paid in. However the government is clearly saying there is not enough cash and so they need to ration it and make sure the most deserving get it first.

I also agree with ST - give them nothing at all if possible, except a kick in the teeth as they will surely do that to you if they can.
