Wasted public money

Times: Winter fuel bonanza for 64,000 expats in Europe

Not megabucks but the principle is why do you need a fuel allownce if you live on the Costas or Algarve?

Hey Andrew. I forgot to mention I'll be getting the winter fuel allowance next year - and also my bus pass, so I can leave the Beemer in the garage. :-)

Many and varied arguments to this one. With some knowledge of the climate in the med during winter I can say that the houses are not always warm, being designed primarily to stay cool in the summer. Energy prices in these locations are also generally quite high and central heating almost non-existent so perhaps the argument is not as clear cut as it seems. What it takes is social responsibility for those who can afford to heat their homes regardless of where they are to either not take the money or to donate it somewhere it can be used effectively. It might be argued that than anyone in receipt of the allowance, who doesn't need it, is going to make a better judgement if they were to donate the money to a worthy cause than our feckless politicians.

Good luck to them, at least they had the balls to get out of the overpriced dump the UK has become.

“To get the deficit under control, cuts in unnecessary benefits are going to be essential,”

"cuts" in unnecessary benefits? Reductions in unnecessary benefits? Er, elimination of unnecessary benefits?

"going to be essential", 'cos previously, throwing around money stolen from others just wasn't of much interest.
