Daily Mail ran a similar story, the most popular reader's comment was, "Restore confidence in Britain again - get out NOW Gordon. The joke's over."

Does anyone remember just before New Labour came to power, that a lot of people/media were saying "they liked Labour's policies but were unsure if they were able to manage the economy??!"

I hate Gordon Brown's state.

Brown still believes we can spend our way out of recession and borrow our way out of debt, and continues to bet the whole farm on it.
This whole recession has got out of control, mainly thanks to government meddling. If the markets had been allowed to function correctly then we would have had a great deal of pain, got over it and been in a position to stage some form of recovery.
Instead Brown has attempted to saved us all but in doing so has doomed us all. The boom allowed a lot of people to start things that were poorly financed and non-viable, these ranged from unaffordable houses to nonsense businesses. A bust, if allowed to take its course, cleanses the system of these broken arrangements and allows better ones to replace them.
The state we are in now seem to be one of zombification. Despite spending oodles of money the underlying problems are still there, unfixed and ready to blow. You simply cannot buck the market, it's like trying to cheat death, it comes back around and gets you...

I idealogically hate Gordon Brown's state full of dependency and despondency. People led to believe that all they need is for the state to give them everything out of a sense of entitlement. Nobody wants to work and save, they want to punt on the Lottery and fool the social services. He is spending the money that our children and unborn are going to have to pay back alongside us. If he were an honorable man he would say that those unborn and who are still children that will one day have to pay for their share of this should have a vote when he retires on what pension he and his cabinet receives based on the legacy he left.

@4. 'Instead Brown has attempted to saved us all but in doing so has doomed us all'.
Brown tried only to save the feckless and greedy and to win the election in doing so.
He's given two fingers to the savers.

Now you're talking tom101! What amazes me is how many people are taking this sitting down. It seems that about 50% of the population don't appear have a diddly-squat about what is going on, about 35% (FTBs and savers?) are fully-versed in the gory details but just shrug it off with a weary smile and about 5% are fully-versed and feeling murderous. That leaves 5% who think that everything is OK and that GB is OK as politicians go; well-meaning but unfortunate 'people-skills'.

I seem to remember the Tories saying the same thing about New Labour...

'And he cited letters signed by more than 60 economists in today's Financial Times, which backed Chancellor Alistair Darling over his decision to delay spending cuts until next year.'
'Ha! I'll see your 20 analysts and raise you 40!'

CONservatives are just as much about big government as Labour. They are not Libertarian by any stretch of the imagination.

The Prime Minister called for international co-operation on a ''global solution'' to an economic crisis which he said was caused by the banks and not by governments.
AND WHO IS SUPPOSED TO REGULATE THE BANKS ?
The only possible explanation is that they looked at things like the Northern Rock 125% together mortgage
and thought "How clever and innovative"
What is even more amazing is that they still don't seem to be able to control
the banks despite owning most of RBS.

With term upon term of this self serving rabble, I see only but a vision
of Slim Pickens as Major "King" Kong riding a nuclear bomb to oblivion in Dr. Strangelove
I honestly believe that another term of Gordon, Ed and Peter will unleash untold harm to our future generations.
If ever there was a time to act on gut instinct, it's now!
They have the trust only in the weak and desperate.

Gordon Brown knows that he is finished and that he set up our economy for INHERITANCE FAILURE
for any incoming Government. He truly is a very sad and pathetic economist - a re-writer of history
that has encourage and trapped countless people into bankruptcy. Moreover totally wrecked the
UK economy and the value of Sterling. What a misguided, disagreeable and unethical man.
How many people in the UK and elsewhere on this planet are casualties/victims of Mr Brown
and his subordinate’s self-satisfaction and ridiculous nanny state policies?

As Freemanphil says, the Tories will be barely distinguishable, just as EUphile and even more Home-Owner-Ist than Labour.
Mr F said: "If the markets had been allowed to function correctly then we would have had a great deal of pain,"
Well, if the markets had been allowed to function correctly ab initio - e,g. by building more housing and factories etc to meet rising demand, we wouldn't have had a property price bubble and hence no credit bubble;
- if we had less government interference and regulation and spending, then the real economy would have grown better, instead of selling each other houses at ever higher prices without actually producing anything.
- if we had a free market in banking (i.e. no promise of bailouts) then they would never have become so big; and
- a free market tax/welfare system, i.e. replace as many taxes as possible with Land Value Tax and instead of the existing welfare system just have a flat rate Citizen's Dividend,
we'd never have got into this mess in the first place! There wouldn't have been much pain at all.

MW@16 "by building more housing and factories etc"
I'm not disputing the houses but FACTORIES????
No one in this country knows how to make anything anymore, let alone what factories are.

Gordon Brown talks to the British public like a father talks to his 3 year old son, who doesnt know any better.
His quote today: ' this is the time to secure growth and jobs' did he actualy mean 'this is the time to secure house prices and our portfolios'

If the Tories had been running the show it would have been worse. Much worse. The notion that Governments Worldwide should contrive to control the immoral markets that created CDS is a huge step in the right direction. Capital would have nowhere to flee and usurp democratic decisions about taxation levels….Except say Botswana – and I’d love to see a few escape there Sugar,et al.
One idiot in here stated the cause of this calamity was TOO MUCH banking regulation….you’ve got to laugh.

It's glaringly obvious there has been an extreme lack of regulation, to the point of incompetance and neglect. Only noone will be held accountable.
'What if's', are pointless. You base future decisions on a number of variables, historic data being quite an important area. Tories, had little or nothing to do with the current mess. And nobody can guess what might have happened had they been in gov't. All I know is GordoB won't be getting my vote.
Message to GordoB: - 'You're not good enough to lead this country. You've been taken for a ride by the corporate financiers, played like a fool. You might have had great ideas, but you're execution and performance has been seriously lacking. I believe Tony Blair though he was doing the right thing. I'm not so sure you do though (Not now). But it's amazing how deluded people in power can become. Who on earth is advising you? Bankers? May I suggest you take a large step back and assess the carnage. You have your pension sorted, why not just enjoy your life, with your family. Let Jack Straw have a go.'

There is one clear thinking politician: Vince Gable.
Politicians think that people need a job and they do not have to be to smart to understand how banks work or how banks have created trillions of worthless derivatives that can produce an explosion at any time.

I agree with you HP. This is the sort of non-falsifiable rhetoric that Labour and Keynesians cling to like grim death. I could just as easily say that if the Tories had been running the show there would never have been a crisis, houses would be affordable, Britain wouldn’t be in debt, we would still hold all of our gold reserves and not a single bank would have needed bailing out....simples.

I hate -our- state as badly provided for by New Labour, not states generally, not the idea of government and the good of social provision. I am sure many people who are bitterly against New Labour, are in favour of many of the policies of the left.
People who support extending the overarching decisions of government over working people in good health need to remember that the only reason to want that would be if you were too stupid and incapable of making decisions yourself, so its hardly a valuable opinion.
In fact, it seems to me, that the only people with a valid case for supporting New Labour, would be too dumb to reach that conclusion. Which leaves the sad remnants of disguised self-interest.

Vince Gable = hypocrite, deceiver, actor, he's a politician he says what some want to hear, a bit late too!
Land Value Tax = Disguised Socialism i.e. formalised theft, from workers and owners alike, so that they can become Welfare junkies; read the Wealth of Nations already and have your Socialist blinkers evaporate!
