There's something quite galling about seeing a succession of talking heads in the banking industry sternly demanding that cuts are made and taxes increased to reduce the deficit that saved their a**es.

The flaws in Hutton's theory was exposed but perhaps your title is a bit harsh? The American commentator, Dr Irwin Stelzer, said "you guys [UK] are headed towards a fiasco because of the fiscal defecits ..." but the very same could be said of the America which is also an economic basket case. The hypocrisy of Dr Stelzer telling us we have to cut back on government spending was no less silly than Hutton's statements and should have been picked up by Paxman.

I don't think he said that US wasn't heading the same way. Its hardly hypocrisy.

Pretty big salaries for a charity. I suppose the argument would be along the lines of paying the market rate. Banks make up their own rates; I didn't think charities could get away with it too, though perhaps this is a different kind of charity.
