New fears for unaffordable housing?

Timesonline: New fears over funding for affordable housing

Government-funded affordable housing schemes are regarded by many first-time buyers as their only hope for getting a foot on to the property ladder. Yet funds for shared ownership, shared equity and rent-to-buy schemes cannot be guaranteed after the election as the new government slashes spending to tackle Britain’s record £178 billion budget deficit.

Well!! so all the first time buyers have to do is hang on in there until house prices reach the "sensible affordable level" which they inevitably will!!!!!

This is of course a good thing for FTB's but I'm sure most of you on this site are educated enough in govt /media double speak to realise this by now!

Surely all this house-building is a good thing? From what the article says, it seems the HCA actively builds council houses rather than merely subsidising buyers? - "The next round of council houses, announced in September, will be ready in August."

Unless public sector housebuilding is crowding out private sector housebuilding (and I see no evidence of that), then there's nothing wrong with building more council houses, surely?

God forbid! It might mean prices need to drop to a level that matches real world wages, middle England hasn't quite got it's head around that one yet.
