Guardian: Billy Bragg to withhold taxes in bank bonus row
Billy Bragg stands up for us - good for him. Note the last paragraph: "A Treasury spokesman said: "We can reassure Mr Bragg and anyone else that there will not be big bonuses paid with taxpayers' money at RBS. Taxpayers' capital will be completely protected." "
Relief all round then.

Gesture politics, as ever, from this egocentric little t*rd, I'll fall about laughing if he carries out his threat and is then prosecuted for non payment of taxes.
Pretty rich coming from someone who has moved well away from his native area and now enjoys a comfortable lifestyle in leafy Dorset.
Typical left wing hypocrite.

And before anyone takes issue with my comment @1, let me say that there are plenty of right wing hypocrites as well.

Not bothered about billy brag says or what he represents, but i am watching the impact of "tower power" on this case with interest.
Labour brought out a temporary stall to bonuses until the next election to appease voters, but its not worked seemingly.

Virgin Money has made three new appointments to aid its expansion into the retail banking market. It has appointed Finlay Williamson, ex-finance director of The Royal Bank of Scotland as chief financial officer, Ian Cornelius, ex-director of retail products at Bradford & Bingley as managing director and Marcus Ezekiel, ex-head of legal at HBOS Retail division, as commercial director.
A spokesman for Virgin Money, says: “I am delighted to welcome Finlay, Ian and Marcus to Virgin Money.
“Our approach to banking will be founded on developing a sustainable, well capitalised and prudently managed retail bank with an absolute focus on serving customers. With their skills, knowledge and banking experience they will be invaluable additions to the Virgin Money management team”.
Virgin Money has made an offer for Church House Trust a regional private bank. If accepted by Church House Trust shareholders the acquisition will provide the platform from which savings and mortgage products will be offered to consumers under the Virgin Money brand.

whats with all the hatred on HPC for Billy Bragg. He made his money from selling music ffs. Its not like he made you buy his CDs or exploited millions of people in order to accumulate his (modest fortune)
@mr g What exactly is so hypocritical about him then? Unless he has preached against making money from concerts and selling CDs I don't see how he is a hypocrite. Now if he owns a sweatshop in China on the other hand...........

"The myth of Trust" what a song - Billy is a poet and was my hero at uni - I can still play most of his songs
Not to sure Mrs Number Cruncher wants me to withhold my taxes but it is not the first time - I got taken to court for non payment of Council Tax by Worthing Borough Council back in 1990.

Let's face it, there's enough room for a family of pigeons alongside Mr G in his hole. Go on, please explain why you think Mr Bragg is a hypocrite? Is it because he's rich? That implies that you think being left-wing is simply about attacking the rich and as such speaks much more about you than it does about your target. Have you ever thought about pursuing some kind of path in life that doesn't involve being a one-dimensional stereotype?

You have missed the middle wing, over and under wing... so forth mate. Such blindness is the problem some of us face with the great unwashed masses who think wiser people are nutters. The 'fringe' benefits. The masses are never right when it comes to the crunch.
History my long lost friend, history.

The government has the right to limit the size of RBS bonuses and until it exercises it, Alistair Darling's not having my money

withdrawing our money from the banks would be far more effective, not least because it's a game that we can all play
needs to be coordinated though

Herding cats, chaos.
The great days of full consciousness will strike in the minds of enough people in the final days of realization and thus bring most closer to a long awaited freedom from the evil ball 'n' chain temptress that so many hold in such high esteem.

Agreed. Could be easier that you think with flash mobs already a phenomena.
The banks have a habit of shamelessly announcing their annual bonuses to the public, flouting their wealth and simulatneously flicking V-signs. The public can counter this with a retaliatory withdrawals when the bonuses are made public.
If the bankers think they are in control we can easily teach them that without our deposits their businesses die an immediate death. With organised bank runs, we The People are empowered enough to show them just how really is in charge. Its us, and it always was.

LTH@5 "Presumably you align yourself with the right-wing category"
I don't consider my views to be either left or right wing, both extremes simply look after their own VI's and don't give a sh*t about the majority of ordinary people.
Good luck to Bragg if he chooses to live in Dorset, nothing wrong with upward mobility and bettering yourself, just don't preach to me about how I should live.
What I don't like are people (politicians, musicians, celebs etc.), who tell me how I should live, spend my hard earned money or want to change society to a worker's utopia and yet live like country gentlemen / women themselves.
