Insane in the Membrane!

Daily Mail: Labour to 'guarantee jobs for all of Britain's 2.5million unemployed' in bid to reduce Tory poll lead

minimum wage £5.80/hr x 40 x 2.5x10^6.
or £580 million/week

actually "government-funded work or training"
- Training will not cost as much as that - just huge classes of bored unemployables reading newspapers ( given that they turn up ).
Govt funded work may be sponsored, i.e. govt make up the difference and could include work that is worth more to the govt than they are paing ( although I doubt that would actually occur, I think most will be the "Training". )

Hello Eastern Europe, the super plan is revealed. The rank and file of the Labour party don't actually believe in a free market economy so this is a fairly scary proposal.

on the cost issue of this looney idea. I agree, that the devil is in the details, and its unknown as to how many would be fully employed. Having said that although the minimum take home pay is £5.80 hour, the actually cost to the organisation employing them would be significantly higher, up to double that figure.

Therefore I agree with still thinking, this is un-nerving, and strongly suggests a blatant disregard for the long term financial health/stability of this country.

What about promising to give everybody a million pounds - as part of an election pledge?

There is no limit to the irresponsibility of this government.

This would have been better implemented during the boom years, when there were actual jobs to go to. It was ridiculous that people were lounging on the dole (especially in London) when Poles and Slovaks were racing to the UK to get jobs. No doubt a lot of people would suddenly disappear from the unemployment register.

Looney beyond words, just shows you how desparate Labour are. How does this fit in with the cuts that are necessary for the economy?
Anyway, many of today's yoofs are unemployable thanks to the rubbish education in this country, brainwashing and celebrity culture via the media, parents that don't have time for them due to knocking themselves out to pay for their overpriced houses and the goods that they are brainwashed into putting on their credit cards etc.

Isn't the government going to need to cut the number of jobs it provides? I expect this will mean they sack everyone and then re-emply them on minimum wage through this scheme. Aren't they kind - I should invite them round for a nice cup of tea to say thanks.

Who the hell would want to work for £5.80/hr? Nurses START on £22,000 a year and get paid to train. No brainer EVERYONE retrains as a nurse (or any public sector "officer" job you fancy).

Perhaps a more balanced economy might help, move the emphasis away from money shuffling and selling each other double glazing to more productive and socially worthwhile activities.

Just kidding, after all you would'nt want an ex stockbroker repairing your car, he'd probably sell it before he'd finished working on it.

Three hours!!? Is that all? I've spent longer discussing which biscuits make the best dippers! No wonder this country is in such a mess.

"The plan was thrashed out during a three-hour cabinet meeting on Tuesday after Gordon Brown urged ministers to come up with their most radical manifesto in a generation, according to The Times".
