News of the World: Boom goes the gloom
The weather outside may be frightful, but the economic news is delightful, with figures set to show we're pulling out of the longest SLUMP in history.
Howard Archer, chief UK and European economist at leading forecasters IHS Global Insight, said: "Latest data and survey evidence suggest overall that the economy will finally return to growth in the fourth quarter, although it is still hardly racing ahead." And while the government will cling to the green shoots, it is by no means out of the woods. At £20.3billion, last month's UK budget deficit was the highest ever and heading for £185billion next year.

From the publication:-
'But on Tuesday they will say the latest data shows they got it wrong. The statisticians have done some number-crunching to show construction output expanded by two per cent quarter- on-quarter rather than contracting by 1.1 per cent as it originally thought.
'Business investment had shrunk less than thought and the trade deficit was down. All added together it means they are expected to say the decline was just 0.1 PER CENT.
A senior Whitehall source said: "The markets are expecting a revision to 0.1 per cent. That is as near as dammit to flat, especially if you allow a margin for error because of statistical variations." '
Nothing to do with QE then? Maybe the gov't should pump Gazillions of £'s in every year!
