U.S. citizens are joining immigrants in store parking lots
Las Vegas Sun: The new faces of day labor
In the latest sign of the Las Vegas Valley’s economic free fall, U.S. citizens are starting to show up in the early mornings outside home improvement stores and plant nurseries across the Las Vegas Valley, jostling with illegal immigrants for a shot at a few hours of work.
Experts say the slow-starting but seemingly inexorable trend is occurring nationwide.

I once read a fascinating article about these informal labour exchanges.
Basically, building companies and people looking for work agree certain particular benches or bus stops where they will meet up each morning. Quite why one particular bench or bus stop is chosen is a mystery, but once workers now that builders will drop by and pick a couple of people they gather there; and once builders know that workers will gather there, they drop by if they need a couple of bods.
There used to be one at the end of my road, every morning there'd be three or four East European types with workboots sitting there, and every now and then a van would stop and one or two of them would jump in. I've not noticed them for a while, so maybe the new meeting place is somewhere else.

maybe outside tescos unemployed chefs offering to cook your food for you..

Friends of mine have just return from an American road trip, they tell me that LA was tent city on the way in & on the way out the other side..There American friends were not to keen to stay there to long, with a couple of limey tourist !

Viva Las Vegas where the rent is free and the living is open plan, no water rates is a real plus. With the additional 24 hour entertainment
thrown in at your doorstep this post recession opportunity is too good to miss. There is always another story behind the glitzy headlines.
With a "mobile" population I see things going from bad to worse in the US. California may be better.
