Green shoots grounded
BBC: British Airways to cut 1,700 jobs
British Airways has announced that is to cut 1,700 jobs and introduce a two year pay freeze for cabin crew as it looks to cut costs during the downturn. It also announced that it would press ahead with plans to recruit new staff on different terms and conditions to current employees. The airline is losing money and expects to make a big loss for the second consecutive year. Global airlines are struggling with a fall in passenger numbers.

House prices increase if any is doomed in an environment in which millions fear losses of their own jobs, period.
Any green shoot theory just sounds emplty to those millions. How can such micro-ecomic ordeals be translated into macro-economic euphoria?

Good. It couldn't happen to a nicer company. If I treated my customers like they treat theirs I would be going down the tube too.

More fodder for the jobless recovery...

I was so sorry to read this. I love BA and am flying with them (again) to Venice this weekend. (Club Class for just £43 extra one way - WOW!). Anyway, they have been saddled with responsibilities from the off, as they were once part of the Public Sector. When BA privatised they were obliged to honour pensions etc of those already in the 'scheme'. They still have to honour those committments - hence an uneven playing field when competing with other (Virgin?) airlines who have no such worries.
Come on BA you beauties - make me feel like a star in your Club Lounge at T5 - like you did last month when I flew to Chicago.
Sorry this is so biased, but I genuinely feel for the people who have to compete for custom in this day and age.
BTW - if you're wondering why house prices are rising - look no further than Public Sector workers who have no fear of pay cuts/job losses and are doing very nicely out of it. In my area (S Wales) all houses near me are SOLD - all to nurses/teachers/doctors/LA"Officers" etc. They're the ones keeping the 'Bubble' going.

A bit of a Baldrick cunning plan, but can we not make being jobless a JOB, please do not inform the government of this idea as they might try to implement it.All they need to do is, print more money, give it a crap title like Easy living officer & payed an annual salary of £15,000 with a final salary pension of F**K ALL.

British Airways is heavily reliant on business traffic for its profits; and business people just aren't flying any more (or if they are, they're in the economy cabin). I wonder whether business-class travel is a leading indicator or a lagging indicator...?

and less business traffic to the states because? unemployment is still growing in the USA

@drewster - you make a very valid point on this - I was speaking with a couple of Taxi drivers recently and asked how business was going - they had a very good contract taking visitors to and from a large Akzo Nobel Mfrg plant in the North of England but the workload has dropped by about 80% as fewer people are flying in/out.

What a day! Hey Jack, how on earth did you beat Mark to the job loss figures? You do know that you must have spoilt his evening with your insensitive move. It's his job to report gloom on employment don't you know!

@ smugdog, in answer to your hibernation post earlier
"Better to burn out than fade away" (Highlander)
I agree on the hibernation state,& most of the UK population are in this semi comatose condition, blinkers on ear flaps down, however sometimes it pays to be patient, let all the desperate people & greedy plebs go over the top first into the abyss & hail of machine gun fire, then surface, picking up the debris at the aftermath..
You only have to look at Spain to see what happens to bulls there, either in the housing market or by the matadors sword!
I do not think hp bulls are actively awake they have one goal, money..And as Bruce Lee said " Look beyond the pointing finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory"

smugdog - I'm sure Mark will forgive me - do you think rising unemployment will undermine the reported rise in house prices?
