mark - I believe the long-term / discouraged unemployed ( usually a year or more) are not counted as being in the US workforce and are therefore omitted from the unemployment figures.

Much of employment and unemployment in the US is estimated, using assumptions that usually distort figures in the direction that suits the government. e.g. most of the employment lost through company failures, and gained through company births, is estimated. The assumptions behind the estimates are based on growth periods and underestimate employment losses and overestimate the gains.

.............and yet optimism seems to be high in Wall Street and the City, so shares rise????? I just don't get it. I know unemployment is supposed to be a lagging indicator, but where will the money come for new investments and new hiring when the taps are turned off. Will the banks jump straight back in with both feet, without the safety net of cheap government loans. On second thoughts, probably,a s they know they will never be allowed to fail, no matter what it costs future generations. so all the clever sods in the city, not just the politicians in Whitehall, are responsible for the enslaving of our children and their children, NICE:0(
