... because in most people's eyes, "living in rented accommodation" is just one step above being in prison? Why don't we call it renting? Do owner-occupiers say that they are "living in mortgaged accommodation"?

At least you can walk away from a rental with nothing owing. Unlike renting from the bank, aka Interest Only Mortgage.
