One in six out of work...

Thisismoney.co.uk: The real jobless total six million

Six million are out of work and claiming benefits, according to research which lays bare the true scale of joblessness in the UK.
The figure dwarfs the official rate of unemployment, which this month hit 2.4m, and is four times the number claiming Jobseeker's Allowance.
It is expected to soar to 6.4m by the end of the year and 6.8m by the end of 2010, prompting fears that Labour has created a generation of benefit addicts.

If the government stops interfering in the economy (as most people seem to want), at what point does the government no longer become responsible for the unemployment figures? Does this responsibility move to businesses? How are they accountable?

That is just it.. the government were never accountable... dereliction of duty many moons ago.. It is the Marie Celeste Government.. The Government are the biggest drug peddlers of them all.. Preying on the victims of plan seeded since their enthronement back in 1997. But the responsibility is not wholly theirs, for it was through the natural consequences of introducing greed (again a la Thatcher) that we have repeated old woes. Coupled this with a generation of Cocaine, Amphetamines, Skunk & Booze. Society is genuinely sick, and is guilty of drunk & disorderly. Therefore, the medicine which is soon to fed, will be harsh as the correction, and the chaos that will ensue will bring about a better future.

This shows what I have always thought: employment figures in the UK and Germany are identical. In Germany there are 40 million people who earn a living themselves (employed or self-employed) out of 80 million people. In the UK it seems 30 million earn a living out of 60 million people! It is just our stats that are more honest!

Bringing this back to topic, why the hell should everyone in the country of working age be working? The very fact of house price inflation has *caused* both parents to have to work to afford their houses. We'd be a lot better off if one parent *could* stay at home and not work, or work part-time.

Incapacity benefit has stayed at 2.6 - 2.7 million for the whole period it has existed: it was 2.7m in 1995. See http://statistics.dwp.gov.uk/asd/asd1/ib_sda/ib_sda_feb05_rounded.xls, tab IB1.1. I'm not sure of the distinction between 'claimants' and 'beneficiaries'. Saying that the government believe up to 1m could get work is almost irrelevant, the fact is that they are not working and never have been, so is not hiding any extra unemployment not in Jobseekers' Allowance. And as stated, it hasn't changed significantly through Labour's time in government, so it's hardly 'creating' benefit 'addicts'.
