Brown faces backlash over plan to cut housing benefit: London Standard

"Treasury plans to pare back a housing allowance by up to £15 a week will mean some claimants could lose a fifth of their income, Labour MPs warned.
Under the current scheme, claimants are allowed to keep the difference if they find rents lower than their housing benefit. Up to half of them are gaining up to £780 a year as a result."
Isnt this a bit chicken and egg - HB is for the median price that a rented property can fetch in the area for the type of property the claimant qualifies for. On that basis if i reduce the rent i pay in negotiations at some point the median must come down.....erm mustnt it?

Brown and/or his pals probably have a few BTL flats of their own. His theory might be that if claimants won't be able to keep the difference if they negotiate their rent down or find somewhere cheaper to rent, then they won't bother and will rent whatever they can get for the full HB amount, thus driving up rents for him and his mates. Or maybe it's just something that Brown hasn't thought through properly.

Does the poor UK worker really want the unemployed soaking up the cheap flats anyway? Why not put them in expensive places that workers wouldn't be able to afford.
..oh..

OK Gordon, you won't ever read this but I'm convinced now. It isn't an accident when you hit the poor with badly concieved tax changes, you really do mean it. Is this a ploy to hand the country to Cameron in order to complete the Nu Lab rightward drift or are you a complete incompetent who thinks anyone on benefits is too dumb to vote? Maybe both?

I think the idea of giving people an allowance to spend how they like is a good idea. If some people would prefer to live in a shed and spend the money on beer - good luck to them
