Born less than a week after my grandfather, who also served in the trenches, and was also wounded.

He was also very reluctant to talk about his experiances until his last days, but even then refused to discuss how he came to win the MC, a medal that he kept, but always declined to wear.

The official citation reads "for leading an attack on an enemy machine gun position, and putting it out of action"

Still a teenager at the time, the carnage he inflicted on that day must have been utterly horrendous..

At the risk of sounding churlish - did he get a good price for his house...? Sorry, but many people complain that the 'top 10' places on the blog get filled with irrelevant articles and, while Harry Patch deserves all the column inches he is getting elsewhere, as do many other topics, I have to wonder if this is the place.

Radio Head have done a strange yet haunting and moving tribute to him........his words.

Lyrics taken from Harry's words:-

I am the only one that got through
The others died where ever they fell
It was an ambush
They came up from all sides
Give your leaders each a gun and then let them fight it out themselves
I've seen devils coming up from the ground
I've seen hell upon this earth
The next will be chemical but they will never learn

Rest in peace Harry........Love TC

Bidin'- WWI was a rather convenient escape for the ruling classes of most of the Belligerent nations. As it often is.The Russians and British were perhaps the most lucky for the onset. Civil unrest, General Strikes, High debt... It backfired for the Russians. Pattern repeated in the 30s. Boom, Bust, War.

TC- "give your leaders each a gun.....". Lovely idea- I suspect it is that simple, but the leaders don't have the balls anymore- much easier to send off a couple of million disenfranchised citizens to the trenches.

Yes but would you be prepared to follow the victor? Possibly not.

Anyway.

Harry Patch I salute you.
