Voting system under attack from totalaterian Brown
Mail: Beleaguered Brown pledges radical reform of electoral system to rebuild confidence in democracy
''Gordon Brown will tomorrow open the door to dramatic reform of the voting system as he seeks to relaunch his troubled premiership.''
He is only going to change the system, if he thinks it will give him an advantage......is nothing safe from his infected fingers?

Come on, a promise of a referendum on PR is hardly the act of a dictator.
Smart move actually, Labour may never be back in its current form but PR would ensure we never get another Thatcherite demagogue (or Blairite one for that matter).

'Voting reform will be considered by Mr Brown's new National Council for Democratic Renewal, which is made up of senior Labour ministers', looks like Gordon is digging himself in like a modern day version of 'Eric Honecker'. As for the 'AV' alternative vote system I'm sure the law of unintended consequences will kick in especially if a large number of people vote 'anything but labour'. This country needs a decent straight ward PM not some Scottish version of an East European communist dictator with aspirations to a one party state with a trumped up Lord as a unelected deputy.
10 years ago if this was on T.V. it would have made the New Statesman look sane!

Before you all start running away with the idea, AV is *not* PR.

Personally, I'm worried that PR will be rejected simply because it is Brown putting it forward. The man is an abject failure but PR is essential for real democracy. Having said that - we'll need to watch the b*stard like a hawk to make sure we get the best system for the people instead of the best system for the MPs which is what Brown will be pushing.
