This stinks of spin to me
Bloomberg: Darling Signals Rift With Brown, Saying U.K. Must Curb Deficit
This must have been some sort of joke:
[Darling] said he was “fully aware” of the need to keep tax rates “competitive” after increasing the top rate of tax for high earners to 50 percent.
LOL. Yeah real competitive, with Dubai 0%, Hong Kong 15%, even USA 35%

Whatever your view on public spending there's no doubt that the tax burden falls too heavily on salary earners and consumers. If Brown got together with his 'global' buddies they could find better ways of curbing tax havens and the transnational companies which perform transfer pricing and other accountancy wheezes to avoid £ hundreds of billions in taxes.

Don't you get the impression that Brown is the Imelda Marcos of national debt.
The guy just dunn't get it that he has a major spendaholic issue as a result of never having run a real business or faced being fired for mismanaging a budget.
