Seasonal Adjustment Only When Convenient

BBC: House sales 'continuing to rise'

Great figures were released today showing that the days were longer in May than they were in April, continuing a trend that they have shown this year. The data are the latest to show a steady rise in interest from the sun, following similar rises in temperature month on month. The British Intitutue of Solar Energy Developers (BIASED) said that cold grey weather was permanently cancelled and we should all buy solar panels immediately.

Wow. At least those reading the entire article can see this fact laid bare, that's a start.

ontheotherhand-Very Funny

I read this piece and was appalled at the BBC's willingness to switch between month-on-month and year-on-year data where it suited them.

"Some 62,000 residential properties costing more than £40,000 were sold in May, up 7% on the previous month."

and

"The number of approvals for house purchases by BBA members rose to 31,162 in May, up 15.8% compared with the same month a year ago."

I wonder what the year-on-year figure is for housing sales? I bet it's down a lot!!

According to the Land Registry report for July , the total sales for May 2008 were 61,038 (and May 2007 107,986) .
