FT: Top tax to force up Premier League pay

This'll cheer you up the next time England get outplayed by a half-decent team. Just when you football fans thought season ticket prices were really too high. It's given me an idea though. I'll work out my tax bill and ask for a compensatory pay rise to the value of. Then next year, when I see that I still have a tax bill, I'll ask for another equivalent pay rise. Werll, I booted it and it hit the back of the net.

This is nonsense. With people cancelling their sky sports/setanta subscriptions and their season tickets due to the credit crunch, clubs will be forced to rein in their spending, not splash out more cash.

English teams have been punching above their weight in Europe because they can afford to pay so much more than Spanish, German and even Italian teams. Now the playing field will be levelled a little.

I certainly will be prioritising my spending when it comes to football.

Although I do not have a season ticket I will be visiting less as the players really do not merit being on £30,000-£40,000 a week. This sport is dieing and a complete revamp in the sports financial management for clubs, players, tickets, merchandise etc is needed.

That's why the likes of Wigan, Fulham, Bolton, can hardly fill their grounds.

Football has been transferred from the people to commerce.

It's no longer a game, instead it's a business that involves transfers, sponsorship, television rights and private boxes full of non-supporters.

How can someone seriously be paid 40K+ a week to kick a ball. 90% of the players can't even hit the net from outside the box. Often ask myself, If a tennis, snooker or darts player was this inaccurate they would even be semi-professional.

How can they justify such high wages ?
