The number of Eastern Europeans leaving the UK doubled in the year up to September 2008, officials have said.

Well observed. However these figures only go up to September 2008 - anecdotally I have heard of a lot more Poles leaving. I expect however there will soon be a flood of people from the Swat Valley applying for asylum...

Surely the key point with the immigration figures is that the vast majority are from outside the EU, where the government could easily tighten restrictions. Europeans will come and go according to the economic tides, but those from outside are here to stay.
