Council tax jinks
Telegraph: Hundreds of thousands overcharged in 'council tax cover-up'
Article about corrections to council-tax banding being suppressed by ministers in order to maintain revenue. "the state conspires to overcharge the public. " . Quite. Anyway, the whole country is heading for council tax banding downgrades, but I am guessing, we are not heading for council tax reductions...which could be a bit awkward as tax on the lower bands will have to rise.

Doesn't surprise me. in 2002 I bought a 1 bedroom new build flat (sold it 2 years later, thankfully!), in the north, which was initially in the same band as the two bedroom flat in Hampstead I'd be living in the previous year!
They'd set it as a D, but I successfully had it changed to a C. Frankly, it should have been a B.
Basically, they were supposed to be basing the band on it's 1991 prices, but instead were using the current(2002) sale price!

"the state conspires to overcharge the public. "
That has got to be the understatement of the decade. lol... But who cares?

Council tax should be reassesed (i.e. increased) for any properties that have been improved substantially enough to take them up a band such as an extension. Politically disastrous so doesn't happen.
Council tax, like all taxes, is redistributative - in this case, the average rate is affected by the mix of properties. If you have an extended house which has not been revalued, you are a freeloading on everyone else. So stop bloody moaning.

C'mon cyril - If I choose to scrimp and save so that I can afford to build an extension, why on earth would I be a freeloader if the house wasn't revalued? Do you really think it fair that I subsidise the council tax of the hapless breeding spongers who prefer to spend their earnings (or benefits) on beer and fags instead?

p.doff,
The difference between you and the ' hapless breeding spongers' is the breadth of a fag packet. Talk nice.

We, like nearly everyone on earth, live in a place where we get taxed and the government spends the money. You can argue for or against most taxes and the same applies to how it is spent.
One thing that cannot be argued is that we can't fund, run and maintain all the things we need (and take for granted) on an individual basis. Even the richest man needs to use the infrastructure that has been provided from tax revenues.
Why do folk who are often well above average levels of wealth spend so much time bleating about taxes and spongers. God knows what they would be like if they were actually as hard up as they pretend to be.

That's right nickolarge and crunchy, taxes are good, are you guys okay in the head.
If you have got so much money then why don't you donate to the tax office, no thought not, most of our tax money is squandered, i agree with the basics, defence, infrastructure and health + education, even with these we do not get value for money or quality.
I can see that Labour's advertising machine did a top job drilling the message deep into most of the populace, that any reduction in taxes will mean a cut in services. Think for yourselves, how much tax do you think you should pay ? You are being dictated to and you actually agree with it.

As a principal I'm proud to pay taxes to for defence, healthcare and support for my fellow citizens in hard times.
The greed based reluctance to pay for public services that many wealthy members of the conservative party adhere to
is the reason why they gained the reputation of being the nasty party and why they could still lose the next election.

9. andrew Pay to Ceasar what is Ceasars.
12. andrew said...
Don't mind as long as Ceasar buys my groceries for the week and gives me a cheap council house.

12. andrew Council houses are not cheap.
I wouldn't accept food from Ceasar, as he may throw you to the lions when fat enough.
A useless eater!
