Times: Skilled migrant jobs to be cut by a third
Skilled migrant numbers to be cut. The number was originally 800,000, now 530,000. This does seem quite a lot considering there are only 20 million workers, 10 million public and 10 million private. There are obviously no plans in place to cut the public sector.

Where did you get the statistic of 10 million public sector jobs and 10 million private sector jobs? That is a shocking ratio. One would expect the private sector payroll to be much greater as that is the part which generates the lions share of our wealth.

stillthinking,
Public sector jobs will go but again it will be cuts in staff on regular wages like London Undergound. Thr fat cat jobs probably won't go but expect to see Less trains and Buses, more vandalism at Stations and Bus Stops.
It will take another large disaster like Kings Cross to bring more staff back again. I wonder how they will cope with the 2012 Olympics - bring in some Temps......

I was thinking about the I.T sector. From my experience, a large amount of private IT workers are paid from public funds through consultancy, contract work etc. Also, IT is one of the short-supply professions (paid too much in the opinion of New Labour). Personally, I don't think IT sector pay is all that much and probably about to plummet also.
So this is good. Guess which sector I am in.

So we'll be moving to a majority-unproductive economy?

Many IT workers are indeed paid by the public sector to build information systems - many of which fail. Whither the efficiency of the private sector and its wealth generation.
