NIMBY's destroy society over concern about house prices
Telegraph: New homes to be part funded by Government
"Although the plan will be welcomed by the construction industry it may alarm existing homeowners and estate agents amid fears that boosting the housing supply may hinder any recovery in house prices. It may also lead to concerns that thousands of homes will be quickly constructed across the south east on green-belt land."
Let's all screw the young to pay for our retirement. If I can persuade the Mrs, we're taking our 5 degrees and 15 years of highly demanded work experience to somewhere else, where this NIMBY attitude is viewed as purile.

I'm not sure building tens of thousands of houses on grenbelt land in the S.E. Counts as NIMBYism, isn't that really IMBYism? The thing that caught my eye was the sentence "developers who are able to build quickly and cheaply will be favoured" So we spend half of the 20th century getting rid of slums only to rebuild them in the 21st century. Gotta love Darling and Brown for their 'vision'. Plus won't a whole load of 'cheap' new housing just kick the @rse even further out of the housing market?

Broadly....would just add that the concept of 'cheaper' housing has been the market's engine since the 60's.
Just think what has happened to gardens and room sizes

OK - look carefully at this bit of New Liebour news management..
..£1bn it says, but when?
- today?, this month?, this year? next year? - over the next five years??
- or will it be like the offer to subsidise purchase of electric cars - subject to conditions that ensure none of the money will ever get spent.
Why can't the 'quality' press get wise to this rubbish, and refuse to print unless the essential detail is there.

erm........quality press? - surely a euphanism not heard of since the days of affordable housing in the uk...last seen dissapearing over the horizon, hand in hand singing the 'Barrat' company song

Ski, that's a good summary. I am sick and tired of hearing about The Hallowed Greenbelt.
1. The SE of England is only about fifteen per cent developed by area (have they ever looked at a map or looked out of an aeroplane window?)
2. What do these NIMBYs think their houses are built on? How come their housing is "our main investment" but new housing is "urban sprawl".
3. It's not houses that puts "pressure on services", it's the ratio of users-to-providers. So with more houses, there are more houses for providers as well as users, it all cancels out.
4. Continued page 94.

Braindead,
I put the word 'quality' in inverted commas for a reason..
Mark,
I detect you also subscribe to Private Eye..

UT ....look there's no argument....if the inverted commas were there as a true sign of irony, then the question is invalid - I share your sense of loss at the lack of perspective.
and it's braindeed - pay attention.
Mark ....it does feel like the closing chapter of 1984 - I'm trying my best to find it all comedic (I don't allways manage it)

I am leaving this country when my kids are old enough to leave home. Its a dump. We have enough of these sh1t houses everywhere, loads of which are empty. The only reason we all have Sat Nav is because every town looks the same so you don't know where you are. Why don't we just tarmac the whole f%^&ing country and call it Tesco.
