Interesting summary by Vince Cable

Guardian: Vincent Cable's slideshow of economic doom

Suggests the policy makers don't know whether to fight the deflation of the richest 20%, or the 5% inflation for everybody else. Umemployment to stay high for 2 parliamentary terms, 32% drop in housing over the next three years, UK credit rating worries, long term budget deficit, rising repossessions etc. Surprisingly, there was no mention of the beautiful weather we have had recently.

Vince Cable is the only guy I can think of in the political limelight that I have time for. You get the impression he's telling a straight and measured story.

The rest come across as filthy, crooked and shambolic; and irrelevant, unhelpful or harmful to everyone but themselves.

Nice bunch we have running the country :(

I'm sure he's not perfect but right now I'd vote for Vince.

dohousescrash - I completely agree. Makes a nice change to see a politician who actually answers the questions put to him, rather than fart around saying what they want which is completely unrelated. He knows far more about this stuff than anyone else too.

I've generally been impressed with Vince but disagree with some of his views.
In particular, he wants to allow only basic rate tax relief on pension contributions (see below) although I hear that NuLiebour are also thinking about doing this.
It's the professional classes that really carry the tax burden in this country, the real high-flyers are the ones that get away with paying very little. It is utterly outrageous that the gov tax you at 40% + stealth tax 8%, then pay a state pension of less than 5K a year, which only just covers your council tax. It wouldn't be so bad if there was a dependable national pension system that you could contribute to.

"The Liberal Democrats will fight the next general election with a pledge to cut income tax bills by £700 for people on low and middle incomes. The party will promise to raise the income tax personal allowance to £10,000 by closing tax loopholes exploited by big businesses and the wealthy. Measures which will be used to pay for this proposed increase in the personal allowance include: Restricting tax relief on pension contributions to the basic rate Taxing Capital Gains at marginal income tax rates, allowing for indexation and retirement relief Tackling Stamp Duty Land Tax avoidance and Corporation Tax avoidance Subjecting benefits in kind to National Insurance Contributions as well as income tax and applying National Insurance to multiple jobs Switching aviation taxes from per person to per plane and increasing taxation on non lifeline domestic flights. Speaking at the launch, Nick Clegg said: "These plans will give money back to the people who really need it at the time when they need it most. "It is time to end the unfairness that sees big businesses and the wealthy treating taxes as something to be easily avoided, leaving everybody else to pay out. "For too long governments have been letting companies stash their money in offshore tax havens while taxpayers are left to foot the bill. "Over time a tax system has developed that creates loopholes for the wealthy and does nothing for those who really need help. "People who say there isn't enough money to make our tax system fair are wrong. Our plans wouldn't add a penny to the overall tax burden, but they would spread that burden far more fairly. "Far from making this reform difficult, tight Government finances and a harsh recession make it absolutely vital. It will help millions of low and middle income taxpayers who are most likely to spend money so helping the wider economy. "The Liberal Democrats will create a fundamentally rebalanced system that is fair for all, putting hundreds of pounds back into the pockets of millions of British people, and taking four million out of paying tax altogether."

the most disappointing thing that the lib dems never did was elect vince as their leader. Why the felt the need to get some young face to lead the party - presumably to compete with neu labour and the tories - I will never know. They could have got hitler in if they were trying to emulate labour. Who is the leader of the lib dems anyway?
