... because house prices are too high?

BBC News: Housing lists 'to set new record'

This was very briefly mentioned on BBC breakfast this morning, ONCE.
Housing waiting lists in England will reach record levels by 2011, according to a body of housing associations.
An extra 200,000 families over the next two years will push the total to a new high of around two million, the National Housing Federation said.
It predicts that 80,000 will lack a home as a result of repossessions and unemployment, and the rest because of the shortage of social rented housing.

I suppose most of you here are too young to remember the post-war pre-fabs..

They were only supposed to last a few years, but most ended up being demolished in the 1970's.

They actually proved quite popular - small, factory made bungalows.

If you tried to to do it today, in quantity, you could probably provide small, two bed accommodation for around £15k a go (+land..)

@ ut, the trouble is the property porn show's and ea's will try and sell them as, easy up, organic portable living, for the family which will be the next big thing, you can extend @ the back into the shed to create another room, which can be rented out to a lodger to make money, or put your granma in there because she has no where to live either, you can stick a dog's kennel on the front to act as a porch, which should treble the property value, tear down the side wall and connect it to a wendy house for the kids to kip in, and if you family gets to big, stick a tarpaulin over the whole building to make it even bigger! Hence my comment on the other posting, a shanti town..

STR2007's idea would fix this. Just keep granting planning permission until marginal land values fall to nil. Building a nice house shouldn't cost more than £75,000 or something.
