Another rip off tax, how will this affect jobs?
Petrol prices: Duty rise set to bring fuel tax to 71% in 2 weeks
Fuel duty is set to rise by roughly 2 pence per litre on April 1st meaning that 66 pence of the average litre of fuel goes directly to the Treasury.

If only Nu Labour could be as clever at spending our money as they are at getting it out of us I would not mind so much!

Fuel is as good a thing to tax as anything, despite the bleating of haulage industry VIs. Anything that encourages lower carbon use (and heightens the folly of the 4*4 tosserwagon brigade) is fine by me.

Except that the 'tosserwagon' brigade can probably easily afford the extra. Everyone I know who owns fast/or 4x4 expensive fuel guzzlers doesn't give a dam about petrol prices.
This tax is not aimed at 4x4's it is aimed at everyone.
I agree with people in general using cars less but it flies in the face of other government policies like buying news cars for instance.
Surely with prices where they are now the government is already getting the extrapenny or two in VAT anyway.

Not everyone with a 4x4 is a member of the tosserwagon brigade, living in rural Devon I need a 4x4 to get me to work in the winter (and it really came into its own this winter as I was able to ferry coworkers into work as well). It runs on recycled vegetable oil so it is carbon neutral. Best bit about veg oil is that the guuberment doesn't see a penny in duty... If they really wanted to hit the Chelsea tractor brigade the VED would be a LOT more than £400 for newer 4x4.

Fuel taxes to encourage the use of public transport do make sense, but only if it means making traveling by car more expensive compared to going by train or bus. Unfortunately, Labour has decided to raise the cost of train travel even faster than the cost of fuel, defeating the whole rationale for recent rises in fuel taxes. In the end, it's just higher taxes and isn't going to change anyone's behavior.
