I haven't read the article of course but if the west's systems of finance and governance are failing, we only have ourselves to blame. If Islamic banks are doing well, good luck to them.

I have noticed a recent upsurge in what appears to be Islamaphobic 'news' lately. There was a snippet about a head teacher resigning over single faith school assemblies recently, following complaints from Muslims. I've also received unsolicited spam email stating that Muslim Clerics promote Jehad (death) to all infidels (non-believers), and are rewarded with a guaranteed place in heaven - the inference being that they are out to get rid of all non Muslims. I was even forwarded a round robin email with a series of photos purporting to show a Muslim child having his arm crushed by a car, as a punishment. I don't know whether these originate from religious nutters in the USA, or some shady organisation with another agenda, but as an atheist I treat all religion pushing (or bashing) with the contempt it deserves.

This sums up the failure of Christianity. I'm going to be bold as say that as I am of Christian background I don't cherish the idea of being culturally upstaged and having sing to a different song sheet after 33 years. But when I look at the idea of disallowing interest and gambling I think these are fine ideals. Seems that the Christian church forgot about Jesus and the money changers when they relaxed the usury laws.
Once that happened the religion was doomed.
Now wheres my credit card? All the adverts I am bombarded with daily give me the urge to enslave myself to debt so I can go and buy a new iPod to replace the last one that failed when the battery died. Why did Apple make it impossible to replace the battery again? Oh yes its so they can pay off the interest on their debts. But that means passing the debt on to me. Anyhoo no time for church, got a never ending debt to pay.
Still I suppose I could go down to the casino and perhaps win the money...

I'm sorry, but I'm with JD on this one - I believe we do need to wake up to the growing dangers. PhD, if you had been alive in the 30's, maybe you would also have witnessed the way the majority of the political elite stuck their collective heads in the sand over the Nazi threat and how at one time Churchill was almost a lone voice in warning against the threat - no doubt he was accused of xenophobia.

In light of our current system something like Islamic banking might be just what we need.
In general of course there are issues with Islam just as there are issues with Judaism, Chritianity, all oganised religions. All dogmatic following of ideals in general. In this country and imternationally.
Whatever the objection focussing on Islam in isolation has absolutely no value. This approach is pointless, opinionated scaremongering. Encouraging people to follow. A bit like Hitler s approach. A bit like the approach of extremist Islam, Christian, Zionist, socialist, capitalist or whatever. Thats how rulers build armies to fight wars and also how groups of people respond to oppression.
Truth is religion died a long time ago. We just havent found a satifactory alternative yet.
