Losing their grip...?
London Evening Standard: Keep calm, says Mandelson amid leadership rumblings
Lord Mandelson today appealed to Labour to keep a "steady nerve" and not be driven into a panic by the deepening recession. His call came amid fresh signs of unease among ministers fearing election defeat next year. There are also reported to be stirrings of leadership manoeuvring within the Cabinet.Harriet Harman is being accused of positioning herself for a future leadership contest by putting herself at the head of critics of the City over big bonuses and sexism.

Isn't this a bit like a group of fugitives telling their pursuers to keep calm now that they're surrounded?

One quote in this says it all for me... "His call came amid fresh signs of unease among ministers fearing election defeat next year."
They're not uneasy about the fact that we're going into a depression - they're uneasy because that means they won't win the next election!

@timmy t - they are uneasy because many will lose their seats and consequently salary, expenses, 2nd home allowance, gold plated pension etc... winning the overall election is irrelevant its keeping your seat and all that goes with it that matters ! - I sincerely hope Crash Gordon ends up in the same position as the former Australian PM

They are uneasy because they know the trough they have all been slurping in will vanish once an election is held.

It's easy for someone with a secure public-sector wage to urge everyone to "keep calm".
Come on Mandelson, I thought you Socialists were into shared struggle?

How about Tessa Jowell for PM?
An Italian court has found British tax lawyer David Mills guilty of accepting a bribe of about £400,000 from Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. Mills, the estranged husband of UK Olympics minister Tessa Jowell, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail at a court in Milan. Mills, 64, was not in court and is expected to appeal. Mr Berlusconi, who last year passed a law making himself immune from prosecution, has denied paying a bribe. In a statement, Mills said he was "very disappointed" at the verdict. "I am innocent, but this is a highly political case," he said.

Call me a misogynist but every time these stupid women appear on television I want to put my foot through it. They are a disgrace.

The business secretary, Peter Mandelson, yesterday launched an extraordinary tirade against the head of the Starbucks coffee empire, accusing him of spreading gloom and overly denigrating the state of the British economy.
Angered at remarks by the company's chairman, Howard Schultz – who said the UK was in an economic "spiral" with "very, very poor" consumer confidence – Mandelson accused him of spreading unnecessary misery and speaking out of turn.
Speaking at a diplomatic cocktail reception in New York, he said: "Why should I have this guy running down the country? Who the f*ck is he? How the hell are they [Starbucks] doing?"
