Guardian: Twenty-five people at the heart of the meltdown ...

"The worst economic turmoil since the Great Depression is not a natural phenomenon but a man-made disaster in which we all played a part."

Anyone find it strange that we can identify and publish the names of the people directly associated with the mismanagement and loss of vast amounts of money, many quite clearly in pursuit of their own gains, resulting in the financial hardship, poverty and even death of thousands, if not millions, yet they will face little or no comeback under the law and indeed in many cases will be handsomely rewarded?
Contrast this with a Doctor or Engineer who can face years in jail for a single mistake, or even a petty thief who can face the same for stealing amounts miniscule in comparison.

I love these articles that blame the general public as if everybody has been living some sort of rock & roll lifestyle for the last ten years not working in some boring office job trying to save up to buy your own overpriced hovel.

Well this is a start, but what about the MPC and their disastrously low interest rates?
GB/Tony Blair/AD are also not given nearly enough credit for their role in the disaster - and their lies about the state of the economy.
One could also mention greedy estate agents and property-rampers and the role that the media let them play.

As for people who saw the HPC coming there's this blog of course and in the US Mish Shedlock, Patrick.net and others, as well as some who called it too early eg Pam Woodall (?) of the Economist.

Give that ever so nice Mr Blair another gleaming medal to add to his chest ware, prefferably with a really big, long, thick pin behind it this time.

It is easy to be righteous after the event- I speak for myself- I feel very righteous.
However, before Northern Rock, I wonder how many of us had nagging doubts.
Certainly, I think it is true that most moderate doom-mongers here probably didn't think it would be this bad. I didn't know what a CDO was 18 months ago.
I am opened-minded, but to immediately assume it is all the work of some shady cabal of pyramid dwellers, rather than just blind incompetence and greed, seems premature.

Totally agree with you. I think from your previous comments you always come at these things from quite a left-wing power to the people angle which usually annoys me a bit. However as this disaster gets more and more serious I feel a popular revolution wouldn't be such a bad thing!

shipbuilder: absolutely.

inflation is...: I think most of us do put it down to greed and incompetence rather than anything intentionally criminal, although it can be a pretty fine line as times. Like shipbuilder, what really appals me is that they received vast rewards for not only contributing very little, but actually helping destroy large parts of our economy. If there were any justice in this world they should be made to pay financially for their gross mistakes.

In light of Gordon Broon's latest comments - birth pangs of a New World Order - you can bet that this was nothing to do with incompetence.

"In politics, nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way."

- Franklin D. Roosevelt

"World events do not occur by accident. They are made to happen... staged and managed by those who hold the purse string."

Of course james stephenson....... I would be inclined to question the value of intelligent life otherwise. The only mistake is to put these people in positions of power and influence in the first place without the threat of responsible punishment.

Cheers and fair enough about the left-wing angle, although I don't really consider myself either wing- is 'power to the people' left wing? A lot of libertarians may not agree. Who should have the power, if not the people?
