Brown government set to feel icy blast

Guardian: Iceland may take UK to European court over freezing of bank assets

The Icelandic government is examining "all possibilities" of dragging the British government before the European court of human rights after Gordon Brown used anti-terror laws to freeze Icelandic banks' assets.

Won't happen - this is an idle threat. The UK and Icelands economic relationship is far too important to jeopardize long term for either country.

The asset freezing was a silly panic response from Brown but the UK would argue along the lines of ... mitigating circumstances .. necessary to prevent capital repatriation ... etc.

It also gives the lie to every time a government minister claims there is no need for laws to circumscribe their powers tightly because they will always observe the spirit of the original intent. No matter our opinion of the Icelandic banks, they are not terrorists and we should not be sanguine about the government's abuse of such legislation. Otherwise it will be us next ...

Just propaganda. Iceland's financial system was attacked by financial institutions that crave centralisation. It was orchestrated to bring Iceland into the EU. The EU will now pose as saviour. Iceland should instead seek allies. I would seek closer ties with Russia if I was them, and I would take strong projectionist measures.
