Somebody loves us, :-D, even though we suck
Telegraph: Britain, ich liebe dich
This summer, I discovered that my fellow countrymen's fascination with the British can also enter the realm of the obsessive. For a Radio 4 documentary, I travelled around the fatherland to investigate the phenomenon of anglomania. For instance: every year at the end of August, thousands of Germans gather at the Polo Club in Hamburg to celebrate British Day.
I think its great to see their attitude. Maybe we could take on their conservative home loan policies.

This is true - the Germans love our royal family. Historical blood line reasons aside, I once stayed overnight at a small guesthouse in deepest darkest Southern Germany, right on the border of Austria. The guesthouse owner said she was so sorry about what happened to Princess Diana (about a year before). "Meh" was my inward reaction, but I said thank you, and said that she was certainly the Queen of hearts.
Then I went upstairs to the landing where there was a fully chronological library of Hell and Okay magazine articles, with Diana pictures taking pride of place - everywhere. It was a bit like when Peter LeFleur goes to the solicitor's house full of unicorns in Dodgeball, or that episode of Alan Partridge when he meets his number one fan.
When BT sold off their red phone boxes, most of them ended up in Germany. Seriously - for a while every bar in town had one.

"Another British export to Germany that is barely known here is Dinner For One, a comedy sketch in which Miss Sophie celebrates her 90th birthday in the company of her four dearest friends, all of whom are long dead and therefore represented by her butler, James, who gets progressively more drunk as he slips into the roles of each the deceased four to toast the birthday girl."
Wow. Yes - this is true - in fact there are many families for whom Christmas is emphatically not complete unless this episode is repeated at New Year or Christmas. A bit like a more stayed and tame version of Monty Python's Dead Parrot sketch.

The reason they beat us at football is they love the sport more than we do.

Quite surprised to read this. Shows that there are good things about Blighty. Sometimes it takes outsiders to point them out. I recall a tv programme about German PoWs who stayed in the UK at the end of the war because they were so touched by the kindness of the British people. Mind you, that was 1945; but some are still about.

I met a Swiss man on holiday who quizzed me if I liked Dinner For One.
He was incredulous that I had never seen it because it screens each christmas there, according to him.
He said that it is quintessentially English;
he also claimed that, in England, it ALWAYS rains.

The Anglo German relationship goes back a long way. Wellington would have a good word for starters.
Dinner for One is as essentially New Year as the chimes of Big Ben in the UK. Compulsive viewing and an institution.
