Dog-house price crash
Times: Seasonal stray-dog crisis comes early as families abandon pets to save cash
Dog charities have reported an unprecedented number of stray animals after the credit crunch, with families forsaking their pets to save money. Battersea Dogs & Cats Home announced yesterday that it had almost reached capacity – for the first time – because of the high number of strays and lost animals being brought in. The Dogs Trust, the country’s largest dog welfare charity, told The Times that it was experiencing a similar trend.

It's the equivalent of abandoning your kids. Anyone who does this should be strung up (metaphorically at least).

I must say, this is not on, dogs aren't that expensive to maintain. It just shows how callous our culture has become under the auspices of this so called "nanny" state. This government has encouraged people to become even more selfish and careless than before. But then again, look how we treat our children, its not surprising. If you will kill your unborn child so easily, then what chance does a dog have? Poor creatures.

Fatal combination of the nanny state and 'me-first' individualism, I think you'll find. Thatcher's children growing up under New Labour.

Anyone who abondons pets is displaying some seriously worrying personality traits. Personally I would want them removed from society permanently

They could at least have sold them to the Koreans

Demise of Woolworth was sad enough. Then people start abandoning dogs/cats, and that in Britain that produced Doctor Dolittle! I am simply left aghast. What a horrible combination effect of Mammonism and fluorine to create soulless nation!
Sometime in the 21st century dogs may start to be regarded as diet rather than pet or family member, quite as in today's China.

I have come across several cases where pets (cats mostly, but rabbits etc too) have been left behind at a property after it has been repossessed. This makes my blood boil.
Too many animals are bought on a whim to amuse the kids for a while (well until the kids either get fed up looking after them, or the cute puppy/kitten grows up). Pets are then simply discarded like so much rubbish in any times of adversity.
I think a registration system where people have to pay for a certificate to keep a pet might make them think more about what they are doing before they take an animal home. As per old dog licence, but extended to other animals.

Absolutely. Unfortunately those who run things display similar traits. You'll find those traits in many a self-help book on "how to be successful". Those traits are the ones that underpin modern 'free-market' thinking. And we wonder how we got here in the first place.

I completely agree with both, your sentimental, and rational commitment, regarding the treatment of creatures, even although you have a problem with a Creator.
Have a great Christmas, and the “best that we can hope for” New Year
