BBC wales: Council to cut staff costs by 10%
A local authority says it needs to reduce staffing costs by 10% - with some of its 4,500 workforce to be offered voluntary redundancy.
Denbighshire council is consulting on plans to save an estimated £5.7m over the next two financial years.
It says council office accommodation could also be cut back.

So public sector workers have to now pay the financial price of private enterprise bailouts, wonderful!

It's about time government started cutting back! Local authorities do a lot of unnecessary things which could be cut back or removed entirely. Who knows, there might even be a tax cut for the lucky residents of Denbighshire next year.

I'll believe it when I see it! Zero evidence of any cut-backs at Exeter City Council. Still the usual hose-piping of cash here, there and everywhere.

There are so many savings that could be made in adult services, social workers are needed and always will be (I know they have received bad press). However, human nature dictates that some people are, by nature, concientious and others are lazy. In the private sector, staff who are off sick six months of the year (milking the system) are sacked, the public sector should be no different. If people are too "stressed" and can't stand the heat, they should get out of the kitchen and get a sleepy job in a shop instead, that I'm sure would pay far less. Add on jobs like advocates and person centred planners should be kept to a minimum, all professionals should already be advocating on behalf of their clients and promoting person centred planning anyway and should not need to refer to non professional people to ensure this is occuring. Senior management should be able to manage budgets and not commision services in the private sector, where thousands of pounds disappear into private sector profits and serve no benefits to vulnerable adults. Equally, services provided by the council need to be cost effective and transparent in their costings. New Labour has thrown millions of pounds at improving services, commendable indeed but all of this money should have found its way to improving the lives of the people it was meant for, in reality, only a proportion of it has.

Indeed - anyone who works with local govt knows that's it's awash with non-jobs and most could easily lose 10% without any detriment to services whatsoever. So long as they cut the right jobs of course.
