No clue whatsoever!

BBC: VAT rise 'dropped just days ago'

Within days of announcing a cut to VAT, a document published online (by mistake) has indicated that the Government were actually thinking of raising the rate of VAT to 18.5%. No doubt, this will probably rise to about 20%+ to pay for the associated cash splurge by messrs Brown & Darling. Being a citizen in the UK these days is like being strapped in the back of a car whilst the car is being driven by a pair of blind drunk lunatics.

What a shame.

Raising VAT to 20% and cutting income tax would have been more successful and less expensive.

The rubric is misleading, and suggests the government decided to cut VAT instead of raise it. Actually, the suggestion was to raise the rate AFTER the period when it is reduced, not instead of. But they ended up choosing different ways of raising taxes from 2010 onwards.

I'm no fan of this government, but let's get the facts right.

This document reveals nothing and certainly isn't proof of a secret plan. There will be hundreds of treasury documents detailing things which were proposed, rejected, discussions of options, and things approved but later amended or dropped (like this). So what? Conspiracies conspiracies everywhere........

But we can't afford the rise, so it will reduce tax income by reducing sales and fuelling the black market, any tax rise now is an attack against the people of the country. They need to pull back troops to pay for tax cuts, not borrow money to pay for tax cuts.

There is no VAT rise other than the return to 17.5% from the reduced rate in Januray 2010. This was a proposal that was not finally accepted. This is a non-story. Give it up.

What does it take to get a comment posted up? An ubsubstantiated and unhinged claim of a conspiracy and an attack on everyone who dares disagree with me? Are the cranks like P4AC moderating this site these days?
