Telegraph: Volcker issues dire warning on slump
[Apologies for straying slightly off-topic]
Paul Volcker, the former chairman of the US Federal Reserve, has warned that the economic slump has begun to metastasise after a shocking collapse in output over the past two months, threatening to overwhelm the incoming Obama administration as it struggles to restore confidence. "What this crisis reveals is a broken financial system like no other in my lifetime," he told a conference at Lombard Street Research in London. "Normal monetary policy is not able to get money flowing. The trouble is that, even with all this government protection, the market is not moving again. The only other time we have seen the US economy drop as suddenly as this was when the Carter administration imposed credit controls, which was artificial."

"Mr Volcker, an adviser to President-Elect Barack Obama and a short-list candidate for Treasury Secretary ..."
Amazing. I'd always assumed that Volker was retired and out of it by now (he is 81 years old according to Wikipedia). That he is apparently being considered to offer service to his country again is a testament to his reputation.

Wow - is he seriously being considered for Treasury Secretary? He may be the one person prepared to drive through the painful measures needed to get through this mess.

LP, I'm a night owl. My brain works best after midnight ;)
QG, I didn't realise he was that old either!
He is certainly one of the few people with the understanding required for the job. Even Bernanke, who studied the Great Depression in depth, doesn't seem to know what to do. Volcker can command great respect too since he is widely regarded as having fixed the late '70s / early '80s problems.
According to Reuters (via Wikipedia) he is one of three or four candidates being considered by Obama.

The amazing thing is the Bernankes, the Paulsons and their mates are still in charge. It is like keeping the pilots in charge after they crashed the plane to quote the author of the Black Swan.Unbelievable.
