The world portrayed in this article reminds me of the one written about in Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand. Everyday I hear stuff on the TV or radio, or in the newspapers, that strikes a similar chord. I feel we are about to witness for real what she wrote as fiction over 50 years ago.

Thanks for the link about Jo'burg, fascinating stuff! The derelict properties are interesting, especially the Carlton hotel. I assume the property owners / landlords are just holding on to those sites, waiting for the economy to recover so that they can make some money. Land Value Tax would help shake up ownership, taking the abandoned buildings away from absentee slumlords and giving the land back to local entrepreneurs. We really must spread the word on LVT.
