Dear Leader Gordon Brown

Timesonline: Santa Brown's great Christmas giveaway

They can't give it away. So bad is the economic situation that the Government will have to admit next week that it cannot stimulate the economy by fast-tracking great capital projects.
So complex are the systems now, so unwieldy the planning process and so untrusted the Government, that the proposals and partners do not exist to build our way out of the downturn. Many billions of pounds are already stuck in the system, unspent. The £43 billion Building Schools for the Future programme, for instance, that aims to rebuild 3,500 schools in 15 years, managed in its first three years to rebuild... 13.

Tax cutting will not kickstart the economy when confidence is at its lowest, the level of debt and prospect of loosing your job is at his highest. Cutting tax for the poor wont achieve much, they dont pay much tax anyway. Cutting tax for the rich mean they will save it rather than spend it. Economies rely on the rich spending not the poor spending GB. Your populist methods wont work. People know too much now.

fjcruiser - good summary and agree with your thoughts - time will tell on this subject but according to R5Live today Gordons popularity is on the rise and Cameron and Co now have only a 3 point lead - could be a high on promise and low on actual delivery strategy.

fjcruiser, the economy most certainly relies on the poor spending.

The rich don't spend that much money, despite what you see on television. I know someone worth at least £80m. They do spend money but not where you'd think - certainly not on customized humvees and Krug champagne (which is what the meeja would have you believe).

There are vastly more poor people in the UK than rich - strip out the top and bottom quartiles, and the true average salary is less than £15,000 at today's prices. That's not a lot of money, and that ignores those right at the bottom of the stack that earn money illegally working in restaurants/night professions/cleaning etc. They might not be very visible but they are by far the largest social group in the UK - you just might not know any of them.

Cutting tax probably will temporarily get people spending, but at what cost? Will the tax cut be uniform, or just targeted at the poor? If so, I certainly won't be joining them personally, and will probably retrench even further in terms of spending, while the government maxes out the taxpayer' credit cards.

Yes, I heard that too, in an interview with Osborne.

I think Labour sussed out the sentiment of the indebted % of the population quite well. Osborne's argument is that people aren't stupid and they don't want tax cuts now if they are only going to have to pay it back with interest later.
In actual fact, people on the verge do want tax cuts now as they aren't thinking about 'later'. They will grasp at anything that might get them out of a hole now and just hope something turns up to help them out later.

There is a similarity between the desires of people who are up against the wall and Gordons/Labours policy of kicking his problems further down the road.

GB's track record is that of "kicking problems down the road" and not dealing with them.

What is that teaching the people of the UK ? - Life always has consequences...
