An addition to the conspiracy v stupidity debate
GATA / WSJ: Rubin, under fire, defends his role at Citi
Under fire for his role in the near-collapse of Citigroup Inc., Robert Rubin said its problems were due to the buckling financial system, not its own mistakes, and that his role was peripheral to the bank's main operations even though he was one of its highest-paid officials.
"Nobody was prepared for this," Mr. Rubin said in an
interview.

There are some common themes here:
1. Pretend that no-one foresaw the crisis, and that no-one could have done anything different to stop it from happening.
2. When you're found out to be one of the architects of the crisis, tell everyone that you're the only person qualified to help anyone out of the crisis.
3. The crisis is always a result of uncrontrollable global forces, never a result of poor management and crappy products.

Conspirators vs Coincidentaloons.
I give you the power to issue the world's currencies, control the media and all the governments, and dare you to not become corrupt, ah, go on try it. Oh, you can't contemplate this, because you will never be in that position and school and telly didn't teach you about it, even whilst Brown is bleating on about a New World Order, global government run by and for the bankers, on mainstream telly, diddums.
