A humorous take on the recession by Tim Lott
The Independent: If this is the end of the road, there must be a rainbow...
Our writer looks around him and sees no signs of the recession. Is it just him, or is everything fine?

Dear Mr Lott (employee no. 6472826),
Following the recent relocation and consolidation of the Independent Newspaper to new premises, we regret to inform you that we are considering your position for redundancy. Please contact Ms Porsche Gallsworthy, Director of Human Resources to make an appointment.
Yours Sincerely,
Roger Alton, John Mullin on behalf of Independent News & Media

"All I can say is that at the moment I've had the pleasure of seeing the Labour Party close the gap on the Tories, (whom I have never trusted or voted for),"
So he's pleased to see ZanuLabour consolidate their grip? What a cabbage.

What an idiot Tim Lott must be, he hasn't noticed anything. One of the comments points out that 90 people have been laid off in his own company which is moving in with the Mail to save costs.

Perhaps he won't notice his office moving.

This article is bordering on the edge of a fairy tale. Tell this to all the people struggling to pay for/keep their homes and their jobs. Perhaps it is a reflection of the microcosm in which the author circulates. Who knows? Fact or fiction? Political speak?...... but Independent in the true sense ........ I doubt this very much.

The sad thing for jack boot bully boy supporter Tim is that the polls are now moving in the direction he doesn't want anymore. Either that or he likes the idea of normal law abiding people receiving a knock on the door at 3am "Excuse me sir but you have talking down the economy recently - please accompany me to the station"

No Recession eh? Maybe when he can no longer get a dial tone on the office phone -- "Hello, hello........" and is told "Sorry Mr. Lott, you'll have to try an extension down the road at the Daily Mail," he'll get the idea that his life has changed along with everyone else's. OR, better yet he can do a news story here on the Continent and get a bird's eye view of what's happened to sterling lately. Those Brits on fixed incomes over here who will be lucky to afford heat this year would LOVE to speak with him.

"Yes, house prices are declining, but so what? I don't care so long as I don't go into negative equity. And it means that if I ever want to trade up in value, the gap between me and the next step is much lower than before. Similarly, if I were a first-time buyer, I would be delighted at the cut-price properties on offer – if, of course, I were able to get a mortgage, which the banks are making it hard to do."
..what a selfish pillock. he is given a forum to print mindless Nulab ramping sh*te........and what does he mean by 'cut-price properties on offer', does he think a one bed for 240K rather than 300K is good for first time buyers in the South East and London (average salary 23-25K/year still means a mortgage of between 6-8 times salary even with the deposit required by most lenders).

The article is part of the current media trend of "is it actually happening....discuss." The media has gone through the initial hide behind the sofa its all going wrong sensationalism phase and is now seeking a different angle as people get weary of the darkening headlines.
That said, these kind of articles really nark me, as they refuse to research the subject. Tim Lott thinks that the redundancies are all in financial services (much as I am not the biggest fan of financial services sector at the moment, I still see them as more important than journalists), yet other sectors are in dire straights. The construction industry has seen about 75,000 redundancies this year to November, myself included and I'm a young highly skilled professional.
Tim Lott inadvertantly highlights the key feature of this recession, in that those in well paid jobs who manage to keep them will be the only folk who prosper, widening the already increasing gap between haves and have nots. Its very easy for a journo, who will be earning way above the average wage by writing about how cushy their life is, to sit in their Stoke Newington house and postulate on the state of the nation even though they never make the effort to travel and talk to folk about whats going on.

How dare he talk down the recession !
There is talk of the economy shrinking by 3%. Back to where we were in 2005.
Can't you remember 2005 ? It was hell. I went two years without upgrading my PC. If it gets as bad as that again I may need to cancel Sky Sports.

I think this is just to show that the Times does not have a monopoly on trite column filler.
