This is why we should not rely on China for cheap goods..
cnn: 6 Chinese knock-offs
Off topic but relevant in a way... For many years we have been borrowing money, buying cheap imported goods, in the end we get screwed for both, we should borrow less and be more self reliant as a country, grow our own foods, etc....
After all do we know if we are buying the real thing, look at the recent milk scare, are the goods really organic? Are the eggs real, etc we rely on honesty from countries with so much corruption they simply make copies and knock offs of the real things...
This article is a new level even for China

I'm not so sure this is really that bad.
Its not branded as a mercedes and the body work is not the same as a mercedes. Sure there are similarities.
Here's a thought: If they were building cars 80 years ago, how come we can't buy a car of roughly the same capability as those cars today for far less than the current price of cars? Or put another way: why are we forced to take a loan for 5 years of our adult life just to purchase something that will depreciate in value when what we really want is something that gets us from A to B? Why can't we buy a new car for 2000 pounds?

This is funny rather than sinister. The japanese started off copying designs too (look at the early cameras and motorbikes) but within 15 years were producing stuff of higher quality than any other country. I see little difference between Toyota ripping off the then-current Merc S Class, and the chinese ripping off the outward design of the Mini.
Conterfeiting is something of a problem I'll grant you but this ISNT counterfeiting. These are real cars in 'tribute' packaging. And we'll all be driving them in 10 years. Anyone remember laughing at the Datsun Cherry?

A laughing stock at the time, but 60% of the price and so much more reliable than an Austin Allegro ... who's laughing now?

Remember the datsun F100A, smaller than a cherry and it's engine internals were an exact copy of the then 1000cc mini engine.
It was probably the best looking small datsun but rotted faster than all the others.
